Types of cottage accommodation

Gables Farm Cottage, East NorfolkThe word 'cottage' originally described a small simple house, especially in a rural area. The word still conjures up the image of a quaint little dwelling with beams and a thatched roof. In fact, many of the holiday cottages available in Norfolk conform to this very image. But the meaning of the word for the holiday industry has since expanded to cover all types of self-catering accommodation in a resort, or the countryside, used for holiday purposes. And it embraces a wide range of property types from self-contained cottages, chalets and lodges, and barn and stable conversions, to property extensions, apartments and loft conversions. Some properties include tempting concessions such as fishing rights, leisure centre and golf club admission. At the more luxurious end of the scale, some properties even have their own hot tub and sauna - a far cry from the tiny thatched cottage often envisaged.
